World’s Largest Ship Triple-E: Engineering Marvel by Denmark and Korea
The Triple-E stands as the largest ship ever built, spanning over four football fields, outweighing 55 nuclear submarines, and capable of transporting over 300 million wine bottles. Danish and Korean shipbuilding teams united to construct this record-breaking vessel in just 38 weeks, tackling unique engineering hurdles. Advanced techniques mirroring top shipyard operations were employed throughout the process.
At the naming ceremony, leaders from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Maersk’s Chairman, Maersk’s CEO, and the Danish Ambassador to Korea gathered. The inaugural vessel was christened “Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller,” launching a series of 20 ships with 18,270 TEU capacity.
Globally acknowledged as the Triple-E class, it meets core standards: Scale Economy, Energy Efficiency, and Environmental Efficiency. Priced at 200 billion KRW ($177 million), the fleet contract totals 4 trillion KRW, representing Korea’s highest shipbuilding deal.
McKinney Moller, a key Maersk executive who drove the 2011 order signing, was honored through this naming as a tribute to his legacy.
